Nuclear Waste Watch / Action déchets nucléaires was founded in November 2003, to provide a public-interest response to the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO).
The NWMO is controlled by the nuclear industry and was mandated by the federal government under the Nuclear Fuel Waste Act to make a recommendation on the long-term management of high level radioactive waste (irradiated fuel) by November 2005. In November 2005, the NWMO provided it's report "Choosing the Way Forward" to the federal government, recommending something the NWMO calls "Adaptive Phased Management" through which high level nuclear fuel waste is to be stored at the reactor station only until a central site could be identified and a deep geological repository constructed.
Read Nuclear Waste Watch’s 2003 Position Paper, and 2004 Position Statement and list of endorsing groups, and Nuclear Waste Watch's 2005 Report Card on the NWMO’s 2005 plan.
Nuclear Waste Watch's Position Statement was revised in 2012.
